Concerning Photography
“To take a photograph is to hold one’s breath when all faculties converge in a face of fleeing reality. It is at that moment that mastering an image becomes a great physical and intellectual joy.”
This quotation from the late Henri Cartier-Bresson is the starting point for my own work. I am fascinated by urban landscapes and the city. The aim is to go beyond the clichés of tourism, and to catch people and life unawares. For this reason I never use models, and as the people I have photographed have gone by seconds after I have pressed the shutter, it is not feasible to obtain model release. Often my subjects appear at the very edge of the picture, or are shot from behind. When faces could be recognisable, I would never allow a picture in the public domain which would in my view be demeaning to the subject, which is my ethical validation for this approach.
I was born in London and live and work here.
My influences are: Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, Garry Winogrand and many more.
I have learnt photography from looking at photo-books from Fox Talbot “The Pencil of Nature” to those of Martin Parr and Joel Meyerowitz.
My ambition is to publish my own photobook: will photographic agents and publishers please note!
I use Leica film and Canon digital SLR cameras.
